Braves Have a Chance to Change the Direction of Their Season Tonight

MORGANFIELD, KY (10-2-2026) —There are games on a football schedule that mean a little more than others.

Friday night is one of them for the Union County Braves.

At 2-4, we all can agree the first six games have not gone exactly the way we wanted. There have been some tough nights, including a three-game losing streak that saw the Braves struggle to find points while giving up too many on the other side.

But here’s the good news: none of that decides what happens next.

Union County opens district play Friday night at home against Hopkins County Central, and the Braves enter that game coming off exactly the kind of performance they needed.

Union County went on the road last week and beat Hancock County 28-6. It wasn’t just a win. The Braves held an opponent to their lowest point total of the season and snapped a three-game losing streak in the process.

Now they have to build on it.

Hopkins Central comes to Morganfield at 3-3, and their record doesn’t really tell the story of what kind of team they’ve been.

The Storm have been about as hot and cold as a football team can be.

In their three wins, they’ve scored 66, 41 and 49 points. That’s 156 points, or 52 points per game.

In their three losses?

They’ve scored 0, 12 and 6.

That’s just six points per game.

So which Hopkins Central team shows up Friday night?

Union County can have a lot to say about that.

One player the Braves will have to find on every snap is Dallas Kinlaw. He ran the ball 23 times for 192 yards and two touchdowns last week against Russellville.

That’s more than eight yards every time he touched the football.

If Union County can slow down that running game, force Hopkins Central into uncomfortable situations and play the kind of defense we saw last week, I like where the Braves stand.

History is certainly on Union County’s side.

The Braves have won the last five meetings against Hopkins Central. They’ve scored 217 points in those games while allowing 78.

But history doesn’t make a tackle Friday night.

This year’s Braves have to do that themselves.

What makes this game so important is what comes after it. Union County is 2-4, but they’re also 0-0 in the district.

So is everybody else.

Friday night is essentially a fresh start.

Win this one and suddenly you’re 1-0 in district play, you’ve won two straight and the conversation surrounding this season feels completely different than it did two weeks ago.

That’s why I think Friday night will tell us a lot about this Union County team.

Last week’s win showed the Braves can respond after a difficult stretch. Now we’ll find out if they can turn one good night into something bigger.

The opportunity is right there.

They’re back home. They’re coming off a win. They’ve dominated this matchup in recent years. And for the first time this season, there’s a district game sitting in front of them.

The first six games are already written.

Friday night is where the part of the season that matters most begins.
