New Traffic Pattern to Begin by Monday at Twin Bridges

Northbound Bridge Will Carry Three Lanes of Traffic

The northbound twin bridge is expected to carry three lanes of traffic as of Monday.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said crews have been working around the clock to expedite construction of a median crossover in Henderson that will allow one lane of southbound U.S. 41 traffic to temporarily use the northbound bridge.

Originally scheduled to take until the end of next week, KYTC personnel have logged numerous overnight hours this week to accelerate construction of the crossover. The new traffic configuration is expected to be in place before the start of the Monday morning commute.

Motorists should expect to see crews working on the south side of the bridges near the Wolf Hills Road R-Cut this weekend as they complete the crossover. Drivers are urged to use caution and remain alert when traveling near workers and equipment.

The right lane of the southbound bridge is currently closed after a follow-up inspection identified damage to a support beam beneath that lane. The support beam will need to be repaired, with the repair expected to take approximately a month.

Once the crossover is completed, one lane of southbound traffic will be diverted onto the northbound bridge. This will result in three lanes of traffic on the northbound bridge, including both northbound lanes and one southbound lane sharing that structure, while one lane of southbound traffic remains on the southbound bridge. The configuration will allow two lanes of traffic to continue moving in each direction across the Twin Bridges.

KYTC has used this traffic configuration during previous extended lane closures on the U.S. 41 Twin Bridges. By maintaining two lanes of traffic in each direction, the configuration is designed to minimize delays and reduce traffic backups on both sides of the Ohio River while repairs are underway.

Henderson County has closed both Wolf Hills Road and Stratman Road near the crossover. The roads will remain closed until the bridge is fully reopened.

KYTC will provide additional information about the new traffic pattern, including specific traffic-control measures, this weekend.

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allow additional travel time and use caution while crews complete the crossover and implement the new traffic configuration.
