VCSO: Intoxicated Motorist Seriously Injured During Crash

On Sunday, January 17, 2016 around 7:51 pm, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Big Cynthiana Road near Schmitt Road for a report of a vehicle crash with someone trapped inside.

According to the sheriff’s office, on scene investigation and statements later taken from the driver indicated that a white 2000 Pontiac Bonneville driven by 62 year old Randall Spencer of Cynthiana, IN had been traveling northbound on Big Cynthiana Road before leaving the east side of the roadway and entering an embankment, causing the vehicle to rollover and subsequently struck a tree, trapping Mr. Spencer inside.

Scott Township Fire Department personnel removed Spencer from the wrecked vehicle. Authorities indicate  Spencer sustained serious internal injuries as a result of the crash and was transported by ambulance to Deaconess Hospital.

The release says the investigating sheriff’s deputy observed that Spencer appeared intoxicated, and that he admitted to drinking excessively prior to driving. Authorities say an open alcoholic beverage container was found near Spencer’s vehicle. Preliminary hospital testing revealed Mr. Spencer’s blood alcohol content was nearly three (3) times the legal limit, according to VCSO.

The crash remains under investigation.
