UCSO: Morganfield woman injured, 3 horses killed in single-vehicle wreck

A Morganfield woman was injured and three horses were killed in a wreck Thursday night in Union County.

Union County Sheriff’s Deputy James Waller responded to the scene of a single vehicle wreck involving several horses in the roadway around 10:30 p.m. Thursday near the 18-hundred block of State Route 359. Upon arrival, Deputy Waller says the driver, Callie Mayes, was out of her vehicle and stated she had hit three horses.

According to the report, an investigation determined that two of the horses died on impact and a third horse had to be put down due to the extent of injuries. Deputy Waller indicates the horses belonged to Clements Farms who removed the animals from the road.

Mayes was transported by ambulance to Methodist Hospital Union County for treatment of possible injuries.

The sheriff’s office was assisted at the scene by the Uniontown and Morganfield Police Departments, Union County Volunteer Fire Department and EMS crews.

In light of this accident, the sheriff’s office would like to remind motorists to stay alert when traveling dark country roads and keep an eye out for livestock and/or deer in the roadway as it is a very common occurrence in the rural areas of Union County.
