UCPS Superintendent Addresses UCHS Lockdown Misinformation During Board Meeting

During the superintendent’s report at the Union County Board of Education meeting Monday night, Superintendent Patricia Sheffer gave an update about the lockdown at Union County High School last week.

Mrs. Sheffer began her monthly report by commending the Union County Sheriff’s Office, Kentucky State Police, Union County Emergency Manager and Union County Judge Executive Jody Jenkins for their presence and swift action during the lockdown last week.

Unfortunately, Mrs. Sheffer said some undue panic was created by outside sources.

She added that one opportunity for improvement they have talked to their staff about is always making sure students read their emails they send out periodically to their staff so they will know accurate information versus hearing things from parents that actually put misinformation on Facebook and other social media.

Mrs. Sheffer added that all of the teachers shared information with students of what she was sending out, to stay calm, listen, get in the safest area in the classroom until they were given the next steps.

She then addressed parents…

After Mrs. Sheffer’s comments, board members heard updates from Janet Gill of the Early Childhood Advisory Council; Shane Bosaw regarding the Healthy Schools Award, and a new supper program for students; and the final numbers from state preschools regarding a reduction of $68,919.00 for Union County.

In other business, Assistant Superintendent Steve Carter asked board members to reject two bids submitted for a paving project.

He noted they are hoping another paving company would come in, but he added there is no competition to drive the price down.

Board members unanimously rejected the two bids.

In other action, board members unanimously approved the 2016-17 Working Budget of over 27-million dollars as presented by Director of Finance, Amy Morris.

The next regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. Monday, October 24, 2016 at Sturgis Elementary School.
