Henderson, KY (May 3, 2016) — A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will restrict northbound traffic to one lane on the U.S. 41 Twin Bridges on Thursday, May 5, 2016. The northbound lane restriction will be in place from 8 a.m. to approximately 4 p.m., CDT, for milling and paving from the end of the northbound bridge to near the entrance to Ellis Park.
Fine milling of pavement to improve traction and upgrades to signage back in February were designed to reduce the number of wet-weather crashes observed along this section of U.S. 41 until placement of a new permanent asphalt surface could be scheduled at the site.
On Thursday, a contractor will be milling up more of the existing pavement, then placing a new permanent asphalt surface along a 1200 ft. section of the northbound lanes. Once the new asphalt has had time to fully cure, traffic engineers plan to place a specialized high traction coating at the site. That will most likely be scheduled sometime in August or September.
Starting around 8:00 a.m., Thursday, all northbound traffic will be restricted to one lane. Around mid-day, traffic will transition to the opposite lane. Due to the start of this work during the morning commute, delays are possible. Northbound commuters should consider allowing extra travel time. The work should be completed around 4 p.m., CDT, Thursday.
Motorists should use appropriate caution where equipment, flaggers, and maintenance personnel are along the roadway in close proximity to traffic flow.
During their study of wet weather crashes at the north end of the Twin Bridges, traffic engineers determined that high-speed traffic had likely caused wear on the pavement surface along the curve at the bridge end and decreased the traction qualities of the surface.
As part of ongoing safety efforts, KYTC officials have asked area law enforcement agencies to step up speed patrols on and around the bridges. As a reminder, the speed limit on the US 41 Twin Bridges is 55 miles per hour.
