Traffic stop leads to foot pursuit and arrest of Princeton man on gun and dealing charges

NEWS RELEASE

On December 5, 2015, at 1:26 p.m. Deputy U.B. Smith initiated a traffic stop on a Gold 2006 Ford passenger car on Ford Street near Brumfield Ave for failing to stop at a stop sign. Upon approaching the vehicle Deputy Smith smelled the odor of Marijuana coming from the vehicle.

During a roadside investigation into the source of the Marijuana smell a backseat passenger identified as 19 year old
Dawnqua L. Shemwell age 19 of Princeton fled the scene on foot and was apprehended by Deputy Smith.

Mr. Shemwell was transported at the conclusion of roadside investigation to the Gibson County Jail where he was charged with:

Resisting Law Enforcement (Fleeing)
Dealing in Marijuana
False Informing
Possession of Marijuana
Dealing in a Controlled Substance
Possession of a Schedule I Controlled Substance
Carrying a Handgun without a License

Mr. Shemwell is being held without bond. This is an ongoing investigation and charges for an additional subject have been submitted to the prosecutor’s office.

All Criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond
a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
