KSP & KYTC Will Dedicate a Portion of I-24 in Honor of Fallen Trooper Joseph Cameron Ponder

NEWS RELEASE

Hickory, KY (June 10, 2016) – In commemoration of the life and sacrifice of Trooper Joseph Cameron Ponder and in response to a 2016 legislative designation and House Resolution HJR 5, the Kentucky State Police in cooperation with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, will hold a dedication ceremony on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. CST at the Lyon Convention Center located at Lee S. Jones Park in Eddyville, KY.

A sign designating Interstate 24 in Lyon County, from the Caldwell County line to its intersection with Kentucky Route 293, as the “Trooper Joseph Cameron Ponder Memorial Highway,” will be unveiled at this ceremony.

This designation was made possible through a joint legislative resolution proposed by Senator Stan Humphries and approved by the Kentucky state legislator during the most recent legislative session.

Senator Humphries as well as representatives from the Kentucky State Police and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will be speaking during this ceremony.

Trooper Joseph ‘Cameron’ Ponder, age 31, was fatally shot on September 13, 2015 while conducting a routine traffic stop on Interstate 24 in Lyon County. Upon receiving his commission as a Trooper, he was assigned to Post 1, Mayfield, where his death came only nine months into his career.
