KMA District 14 Presents Check to Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet

The Kentucky Motorcycle Association District 14 made a check presentation this week to the Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet non-profit organization. District 14 Treasurer David Holt tells WMSK News the money was raised last month during the Kentucky Bike Rally in Sturgis.

The Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet, Inc. was created in 2009 by Jerry Baird, a retired coal miner from Union County, whose goal was to remove one of the stumbling blocks to optimize school performance for the students in the county and provide shoes to selected income eligible students pre-K through 12th grade. Officials say the program was based on Baird’s belief that not having basic personal items can distract a child from performing well in school and that a new pair of shoes can help build self-esteem and reduce teasing and bullying.

Since its creation in 2009, officials happily report the program has grown rapidly and includes several counties in western Kentucky. The program provided shoes for 450 students the first year and 700 students in the second year. In 2013, officials say they provided 3,000 pairs of shoes and have increased each year. This year, they are projecting 5,000 pairs of shoes.

The Kentucky Motorcycle Association’s next charity event will be August 27th when they hold a Pre-Corn Festival Poker Run & Charity Event to benefit the Union County Happy Pack Program. I’ll have more on that event coming up on Monday.

Holt says that if they failed to get back to you, you can pick up your donation. If anyone wants to donate, please contact Brenda at 270-952-4639.
