Kentucky State Police Investigating Police Action Shooting in Ohio County

Suspect Shot After Charging Deputies with a Knife

HARTFORD, Ky. (April 8, 2021)—Kentucky State Police Post 16-Henderson was notified by Ohio County Sheriff’s Department around 1:45p.m. to investigate a shooting involving an Ohio County Sheriff’s deputy and a wanted suspect.

The preliminary investigation reveals Ohio County Sheriff’s deputies responded to McCreary Court in Hartford to serve multiple arrest warrants on Patrick Logan Bunch, 29 of Hartford. Deputies confronted Bunch, who was armed with a hammer and a knife. Deputies ordered Bunch to drop his weapons; however, he failed to comply. Bunch continued towards the deputies where Deputy Katie Pate, 29 of Hartford fired her department issued pistol; striking Bunch in the hand.

Bunch was treated at Ohio County Hospital in Hartford and released. He is now lodged in the Ohio County Detention Center, charged with the following:

  1. Attempted Murder of a Police Officer
  2. Manufacturing Methamphetamine, 1st Offense
  3. Trafficking Methamphetamine
  4. Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine Precursor, 1st Offense
  5. Assault 3rd, Police Officer
  6. Possession of Methamphetamine
  7. Resisting Arrest
  8. Fleeing or Evading Police, 1st Degree (on foot)
  9. Possession of Marijuana

Deputy Pate was not hurt and has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is normal protocol for most police agencies when officers are involved in the use of force (police related shootings). The sheriff deputies also report no injuries.
