Gas Leak Forces Evacuation in Downtown Henderson

HENDERSON, KY, May 11, 2016 – A gas leak in downtown Henderson Wednesday forced the evacuation of several city blocks.

City officials report the evacuation of residences and offices between Water and North Main Streets from Fifth to Seventh Streets was ordered after a contractor working on a construction project at Henderson Water Utility separated a gas line.

According to a release, the evacuation lasted about an hour while crews shut off the gas and contained situation. The Henderson Fire and Police Departments secured the evacuation.

Henderson City Gas Department supervisor Owen Reeves said in a release his department will be making repairs to the line, and only Henderson Water Utility will be without gas service until repairs are complete.

Water Street will remain closed in the construction area.
