Appointed Jailer and Deputy Jailer File to Run for Jailer

The current appointed jailer and a deputy jailer have filed to run for Union County Jailer to finish out the term of former Jailer Cathy Smith who retired at the end of October 2015.

Union County Clerk Trey Peak tells WMSK News the two county employees filed to run for the position before the deadline Tuesday.

On October 26, 2015, Judge Executive Jody Jenkins signed an executive order appointing former Union County Sheriff’s Deputy Shawn Elder to fill the position.

Michelle Steele, of Sturgis, tells WMSK News she has worked for thirteen years at the Union County Detention Center. She formerly served as the Administrative Assistant/Deputy and for the last 9 years she has served as a Deputy Jailer.

Peak says the winner of the May Primary Election will fulfill the term for two years, the remainder of Smith’s term, and then would need to file to run for the position again in 2018.
