Utility companies warn customers of latest phone scam

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Louisville Gas and Electric Co. and Kentucky Utilities say their customers are being targeted in a telephone scam.

The utilities said Wednesday that the calls involve someone leaving a message directing the customer to a fake number that sounds like LG&E’s and KU’s automated phone system. In some cases, the caller ID has been altered to indicate the call is coming from LG&E and KU when it isn’t.

The utilities say other fraud schemes in the past have involved callers seeking immediate payment or emails stating a past due amount and directing the recipient to click a link.

LG&E and KU say they don’t call and ask for credit or debit card numbers or other personal information.

The companies ask their customers to let them know of any suspicious activity.
