Union County sophomore wins gold medal at Wrestling World Championships in Turkey

Union County High School sophomore Jordyn Raney is officially a wrestling world champion.

According to Union County Public Schools District says that Raney competed in the 2023 U17 World Championship in Istanbul, Turkey. Raney won the gold medal in the 121lbs. (55 kg) weight class.

Raney went undefeated in five matches and won the championship according to the district.

Raney had won matches against wrestlers from all around the world, including places like Egypt, Taipei, Uzbekistan, Iran, and India. Two out of the five of  Raney’s opponets were former World Champions, and another was a former World medalist.

The district also talks about how Raney was the only wrestler from the United States to win a gold medal in the Greco-Roman tournament.

Also, with winning his gold medal, Raney got recognition as the Team USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week for his dominating performance at the World Championships.

Raney was able to compete in the World Championship tournament after getting first place in the USA Wrestling National Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada in April.

“We’re extremely proud of Jordyn, not only for this phenomenal accomplishment, but for his outstanding work ethic and strong character,” the district said in a statement. “Congratulations, Jordyn!”
