Union Co. School Board Approves Visitors Procedures to Schools

Union County School Board members took additional steps during last night’s meeting to ensure the safety of students and staff by taking action to amend the procedures for visitors to schools.

Director of Personnel Brian Lovell informed board members they want to ensure that all visitors have a warm and friendly professional welcome to their schools, but they also have the legal duty to look out for the health, safety and security of the well-being of all students and staff.

He indicated they recently reviewed their procedures of visitors to schools over growing concerns discussed during a working session of the school board.

He said their first responsibility is to ensure the confidentiality and safety of students while in school.

Board member Melissa Whitsell asked if this also includes field trips.

Lovell said essentially this change is due to do is the growing trend of social media.

He added this would also apply to therapists who come into the school.

In addition, he stated they are trying to balance to right of parents who want to take pictures of their children when they are being recognized.

When asked by board member Evelyn Meacham how would they handle this logistically, Lovell said every individual would be required to sign an agreement.

Board members unanimously approved the procedures for visitors.

In other business, Assistant Superintendent Steve Carter presented an adjustment to the 2015-16 School Calendar regarding an additional make-up day and last day of school for students.

And there was a packed house at the board meeting held in the Sturgis Elementary School cafeteria due to the number of recognitions. The board recognized and handed out certificates to members of UCMS Chess Team; the UCHS/UCMS Concert Band; KSBA Banner Student Artist Maggie Turner; Craft Academy Student Jolie Beth Baird;  National Board Certified Teachers; and the Sturgis Elementary Academic Team.
