Union Co. Board of Education recognizes local businessman and hears reports

During last night’s regular meeting, Union County Board of Education members were presented multiple reports and recognized a local businessman and several students.

Local resident and businessman, Jimmy Baird and his wife, Linda, were recognized as the school’s community supporter for going above and beyond to help support many programs in the Union County School District.

That was District Public Information Officer Malinda Beauchamp, who added the Bairds were specifically recognized this month for their donation to the schools for implementation of a district-wide reading program, ReadingWorks.

Mr. Baird spoke to board members and those on hand about his struggles in school and in his adult life due to dyslexia. He said if one or two children can be helped by utilizing the ReadingWorks program, it’s worth it.

Board members also heard from Henderson Community College President Dr. Kris Williams who talked about the Dual Credit Program with the school district that started in the Fall of 2012 and how it had grown from 16 students to over 100 students this year. She said KCTCS awarded $600,000 to colleges throughout the state, and HCC was allotted $10,000 for junior scholarships through the program.

In addition, board members heard about new Google Chromebooks and carts purchased for each school through federal and state grants in order to help prepare students for the future.

During recognitions, Union County High School Principal Evan Jackson recognized three FBLA National Leadership students, as well as twelve (12) AP Scholar students and three (3) AP Scholars with Distinction. UCHS Guidance Counselor Amy Nelson recognized the Governor’s Scholars and Governor’s School for the Arts students.

The next regular meeting will be at 6:00 p.m. Monday, September 26, at UCHS.
