FALMOUTH, Ky. (AP) — Officials in a northern Kentucky town have ordered a precautionary shelter-in-place after a train derailed.
CSX Transportation said in a statement that the train had 76 loaded cars, some with hazardous materials, and 49 empty cars. It wasn’t clear how many derailed Wednesday morning in Falmouth. The train was traveling from nearby Cincinnati to Atlanta. There were no reports of injuries.
Pendleton County Emergency Management Director Mike Moore said officials ordered a shelter-in-place for most of the town, which has a population of about 2,000. He said they also have shut down roads leading into the town and have sent students at an elementary school near the derailment to a high school.
Moore says officials took the actions as a precaution while hazmat crews assess the situation at the scene.
