Spottsville Bridge traffic will be moved to new alignment on Tuesday, Aug. 23

Motorists should anticipate reduced speeds/ allow for extra travel time

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (Aug. 21, 2022) – Beginning Monday, Aug. 22, a contractor for the Spottsville Bridge will begin paving along US 60 on the east side of the Green River to address elevation differences between the new roadway alignment and the existing alignment. Motorists should expect a flagging operation in this area.

Also on Monday, Aug. 22, KY 1073 and KY 2243 will be closed at the intersection with US 60 at the Spottsville Bridge. Signage will be installed in the morning hours and the closure will be in place beginning midday.

The closure on Tuesday, August 23, will allow traffic to be shifted onto the new bridge alignment. The contractor will begin swapping traffic onto the new bridge beginning with westbound traffic.

The contractor will actively be paving asphalt at the transitions on US 60 between the new roadway alignment and existing roadway alignment on both sides of the bridge.

Traffic will be flagged throughout the day.  KY 1078 and KY 2243 will remain closed until the traffic swap is completed onto the new bridge and new roadway alignment.  KY 1078 and KY 2243 is expected to be open by the end of the day on Tuesday, Aug. 23.

The traffic swap and paving operations to complete the transitions between the new alignments and existing alignments are expected to take the majority of the day on Tuesday, Aug. 23. Flagging operations are expected to be in place the majority of the day as well. Motorists should utilize alternate routes if possible.

Once traffic has been moved to the new bridge and roadway alignment, motorists are encouraged to continue to use reduced speeds within the work zone.  Construction will be ongoing to finish painting the bridge underneath the roadway, removing portions of the old roadway alignments, removal of the old bridge, and other construction activities required to complete the project.  Motorists should still expect occasional traffic impacts such as short term flagging operations during certain construction activities.

Removal of the old bridge may require a more impactful traffic control plan due to possible blasting operations.  Once the demolition plan is finalized, an advisory will be sent out regarding those traffic impacts.
