Police: Death of HCHS Student Ruled a Homicide

Henderson Police have officially ruled the shooting death of a Henderson County High School student as a homicide. At this time, police say it is still unknown who shot 17 year old Autumn Burkhart.

According to authorities, Burkhart was shot and killed Thursday night when 25 yet year old Joshua Bumphus, of Henderson, and 18 year old Elijah Roberts, a Central Academy student, exchanged gunfire in the 1000 block of Powell Street.

Police reported Roberts and Burkhart were both shot during the incident and were transported to St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment where Burkhart later died.

According to police, Bumphus was arrested and lodged in the Henderson County Detention Center for first degree assault.

As of news time, police have not charged anyone with murder. They reported investigators are still trying to determine who fired the fatal shot that hit the 17 year old girl.
