Owensboro man identified as victim in fatal crash in Vanderburgh County

The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office has released the name of the man killed this morning in a single-vehicle wreck on Interstate 69.

Chief Deputy Coroner Steven W. Lockyear says 59 year old George Welch of Owensboro died at the scene of the wreck from injuries sustained in the accident that occurred around 6:15 Friday morning.

An investigation by the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office and Evansville Police Department, along with statements from eyewitnesses indicated that a Ford F150 pickup truck, driven by Welch, was traveling northbound on I-69 in the left lane and then crossed over to the shoulder of the road and crashed into a guardrail, ejecting Welch through the passenger window. Police say Welch’s 8 year old grandchild regained control of the truck, applied the brakes and brought the vehicle to a stop.

According to the release, the child was wearing a seatbelt and sustained only minor injuries. Authorities indicate Welch was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash is continuing to be investigated by the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office.
