Temporary repairs should let the bridge fully reopen next week
HENDERSON, Ky. (Aug. 19, 2026) – Kentucky Transportation Cabinet engineers and consultants are working to expedite repairs to the approach span of the southbound U.S. 41 Twin Bridge after an inspection identified issues with rocker bearings supporting the bridge.
The issue, which is located beneath the left lane of the southbound bridge approach span, required KYTC to immediately close that lane to ensure the safety of motorists while a permanent repair could be developed. The contractor responsible for the permanent repairs has determined that it will take several months to acquire the specialized materials needed to complete the work, meaning a long-term lane closure would have been required before that work could be completed.
Rather than leave the lane closed for that extended period, KYTC engineers and consultants immediately began developing a temporary repair that can safely restore the lane while the materials for the permanent repair are obtained.
The cabinet is aware of how important the Twin Bridges are to motorists not just in the tri-state, but the entire region, as it currently serves as the central connection of I-69 NB and SB.
The temporary repair design is expected to be completed by next weekend. Crews are prepared to begin the work early next week, with the goal of having the left lane reopened by the end of next week, weather and other conditions permitting.
Because the damage is limited to the structure beneath the left lane, the right lane of the southbound bridge can safely remain open while the temporary repairs are completed. Motorists should continue to expect traffic impacts and should use caution when traveling through the work zone.
Once the materials for the permanent repair are available, crews will return to complete the permanent repairs to the bridge structure. That work is expected to take place before the end of the year. That work is expected to primarily be conducted during overnight hours to minimize the impact on motorists.
KYTC appreciates the patience of motorists who rely on the U.S. 41 Twin Bridges and recognizes the importance of maintaining mobility across the Ohio River. Engineers and contractors will continue working to complete both the temporary and permanent repairs as quickly and safely as possible. KYTC will also continue to review traffic management regularly during the repair process.
