KSP Post 1 Warns Residents of Common “Odd Job” Scams

NEWS RELEASE

(Hickory, KY) – Kentucky State Police is warning families to be vigilant in assisting their elderly family members to avoid common manual labor or odd job scams that occur this time of year.

Each year KSP takes complaints from individuals that have been victim to subjects who perform odd jobs and then charge fees that are well in excess of what the job is worth. These subjects often prey on the elderly or the handicapped that are unable to complete tasks themselves and generally do not question the high prices.

KSP encourages anyone hiring one of these laborers to make sure the final price is agreed on before any work is done. Also make sure you know, or are comfortable with, the person that you are hiring. If you don’t feel good about a situation, just say no.

Common jobs performed often include power washing, driveway sealing, lawn care, and other odd jobs.

There are many individuals that perform these tasks that are very reputable. It is up to each homeowner to decide if they wish to conduct business with an individual.

KSP appreciates the communities help in keeping our vulnerable residents safe and secure all year round. If you feel your elderly family member has been exploited please contact the Kentucky State Police Post 1 at 270-856-3721 or toll free at 1-800-222-5555.
