KSP Encourages Responsibility During Super Bowl

KSP POST 16 NEWS RELEASE

HENDERSON, KY – As one of America’s most anticipated and celebrated sporting events, the Super Bowl brings together families, friends and fans each year to enjoy the excitement of the big game. In many instances, fans will gather to watch the game at sports bars, restaurants or Super Bowl-themed parties. With this in mind, the Kentucky State Police (KSP) encourages fans to enjoy the game, but to make smart choices where alcohol is involved.

The KSP offers the following tips:

If you’re attending a Super Bowl party or watching the game at a sports bar or restaurant:
• Designate a sober driver or plan another way to get home safely before the party begins.
• If you don’t have a designated driver, ask a sober friend for a ride home; call a cab (or UBER), friend, or family member to come and get you; or just stay for the night.
• Never let friends drive if they have consumed alcoholic beverages.

If you’re hosting a Super Bowl party:
• Make sure all your guests designate a sober driver in advance or arrange for alternate transportation to ensure they get home safely.
• Serve food and include non-alcoholic beverages for those who wish not to drink alcohol.
• Keep the numbers for local cab companies handy (or UBER) and take the keys away from anyone who plans on driving after consuming alcoholic beverages.

Remember, your seatbelt is your best defense in a crash!
Furthermore, our agency would like to offer a reminder to the motorists who travel our roadways. The Kentucky State Police strives daily to ensure the safety of the motoring public. Some of these proactive measures include various roadside safety checkpoints and saturating known problematic areas in the district through general patrol tactics.
The Kentucky State Police utilizes traffic safety checkpoints to promote safety for motorists using the public roadways and to provide a deterrent for those who violate laws contained in the Kentucky Revised Statutes.
The intent of a traffic safety checkpoint is to provide for a high visibility, public safety service, focusing on operator impairment, vehicular equipment deficiencies (confirming appropriate registration and insurance of vehicles) and the valid licensing of drivers. Other violations of law and/or other public safety issues that arise will be addressed.
These checkpoints will allow the Kentucky State Police the opportunity to periodically concentrate its efforts in checking for violations of Kentucky traffic and regulatory laws that will ultimately increase the safety of the citizens within the Commonwealth.
