Kentucky State Police Investigating an Officer-Involved Shooting in Webster County

                                          *February 22nd Update*

PROVIDENCE, Ky. (Feb. 22, 2022) The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 2 in Madisonville is continuing the investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Feb. 4 in Webster County. Nathan Cranfield was released from the Hospital in Indiana. Cranfield was extradited to Kentucky and is charged with Wanton Endangerment 1st degree, Police Officer. He is currently lodged at the Webster County Detention Center.

PROVIDENCE, Ky. (Feb. 10, 2022) The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 2 in Madisonville is continuing the investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Feb. 4 in Webster County.  

 KSP Post 2 detectives, with the assistance of the KSP Critical Incident Response Team, have conducted necessary interviews, including the officer involved. At this time, KSP is able to release findings from the preliminary investigation, which reveals that Chief Todd Jones with the Providence Police Department responded, at the request of family members, to conduct a welfare check near the 1200 block of KY-109, also known as Princeton Street in the city limits of Providence. Upon arrival, Nathan Cranfield, 32, of Henderson, Ky., was found to be sitting in his disabled vehicle off the side of the roadway.  During the contact, an altercation ensued and Mr. Cranfield, the sole occupant of the vehicle, brandished a firearm. Chief Jones discharged his agency-issued firearm, striking Mr. Cranfield. Chief Jones administered after care and life saving techniques until emergency medical personnel arrived.  

 Mr. Cranfield was transported to Baptist Health in Madisonville, KY, and then transferred to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN, for treatment of his injuries. 

 Chief Jones is a 34-year law enforcement veteran and has served as the Providence Police Department Chief for three years. Chief Jones has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with Providence agency policy. 

 The investigation remains ongoing by Post 2 Madisonville.  

KSP has statewide jurisdiction and investigates officer-involved shootings throughout the commonwealth as requested by local law enforcement agencies. KSP is committed to being transparent while ensuring the integrity of the investigation. To protect the integrity of an ongoing investigation, it is KSP’s standard operating procedure not to release specific details until vital witnesses have been interviewed and pertinent facts gathered. PROVIDENCE, Ky. (Feb. 4, 2022) – The Kentucky State Police (KSP) has been requested by the Providence Police Department to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred at approximately 10:52 am CST on Feb. 4 in Webster County.

At the request of the Providence Police Department, KSP Post 2 and the Critical Incident Response Team initiated an investigation into the incident which remains ongoing. A male suspect was transported to Baptist Health Deaconess Medical Center in Madisonville, KY.
