Kentucky state employees stop fraud attempt

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky State Treasurer Allison Ball says state employees stopped a sophisticated attempt to steal millions in taxpayers dollars.
Ball told WKYT-TV that the state was targeted right before Christmas. She said one scheme tried to defraud the state of more than $5.3 million and other attempts since then have sought thousands more.
Ball said the schemes “looked legitimate” and may have worked if state employees had not received proper training. She says she’s proud of the way her staff handled the fraud schemes.
She says authorities are investigating.
