Hopkins County man killed in mining accident

A Hopkins County man was killed Tuesday afternoon in a mining accident in Webster County.

According to a statement released by Webster County Coal, LLC Vice President of Operations David Ross, 36 year old Nathan Phillips of White Plains was fatally injured in a mining accident at the Dotiki Mine in Clay around 4:00 Tuesday afternoon.

Kentucky Office of Mine Safety officials say Phillips was operating a continuous miner when he became pinned between the machinery and the rib wall of the mine. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Phillips death is the first mining fatality in Kentucky in 2016.

Officials indicate state mine inspectors and investigators will be at the mine today interviewing witnesses to make a determination into the cause of the accident.
