Hopkins Co. man charged with assaulting police during investigation of sex offense

A Hopkins County man accused of a possible sex offense has been charged with assaulting two police officers and other offenses.

According to Madisonville Police, two officers were on patrol in the Victoria Trailer Park when they were flagged down by residents who were reporting a possible sex offense. When officers went to interview the suspect, 38 year old Warren Stegman, police say he became very irritated and resisted arrested. During a struggle, authorities indicate the 38 year old man punched an officer in the face and then he was tased by a third officer who had arrived on the scene.

During the fight, police say two officers suffered injuries to their hands. The officers and Stegman were treated and released from the emergency room at Baptist Health.

Stegman was booked into the Hopkins County Detention Center for charges of Public Intoxication, Menacing, Resisting Arrest, Disorderly Conduct 2nd Degree, Criminal Mischief 3rd Degree, and Assault 3rd Degree of a Police Officer.

Madisonville Police indicate more charges will follow concluding the investigation of the sexual offenses.
