First round of work to upgrade the William Natcher Parkway to future I-165 Spur starting in Ohio County and Daviess County No major traffic impact expected until July 23 HARTFORD, Ky. (July 12, 2018) – Work to upgrade the William Natcher Parkway to allow it to eventually become the Interstate 165 Spur will ramp up in coming weeks in Ohio County and Daviess County. Preliminary work – with minimal impact on passing traffic – is starting this week along right of way. Work will increase to full construction the week of July 23. The work zone runs along the Natcher Parkway from milepoint 37.143 at the Ohio-Butler County line extending northward to the Natcher Parkway/U.S. 60 Interchange at milepoint 72.264 in Daviess County. According to Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 2 Chief Engineer Deneatra Henderson, the main portion of the upgrade work will run from just south of the KY 69 Hartford Exit 50 Interchange and will extend northward to the U.S. 60 overpass at Owensboro, a distance of just over 22 miles. “We’re pleased to be taking this first step required to upgrade the Natcher Parkway to Interstate spur status,” Henderson said. “This is the same process we’ve gone through to upgrade our parkways for Interstate 69. This multi-year effort will improve economic development opportunities for the region in the future.” Work from the Natcher Parkway Exit 50 Interchange extending northward includes removing concrete from the old tollbooth area under the KY 69 overpass, new edge drains, repairing relief joints, asphalt resurfacing, and guardrail upgrades. Scotty’s Contracting & Stone is the prime contractor on the $28.1 million project to upgrade this northern section of the Natcher Parkway. The target completion date is June 30, 2019. Once construction activity increases around July 23rd, this work zone will have a 55 mph speed limit with an enhanced enforcement presence. Reworking of the tollbooth style cloverleaf interchange at KY 69 is expected to be in the next round of upgrades starting sometime after 2020. The Hartford exit is among four interchanges that will have to be reworked between Bowling Green and Owensboro to meet current Interstate standards before I-165 Spur signs can go up to make the transition complete. The work starting July 23rd mirrors a project started by KYTC District 3 along the southern section of the Natcher Parkway in the Bowling Green area this week. The Natcher Parkway is restricted to one lane in both directions between Exit 6 at U.S. 31-W/Nashville Road and Exit 7 U.S. 68/Russellville Road in Warren County. Motorists will have to stop on the entrance ramps before entering the parkway at these locations. Scotty’s Contracting & Stone LLC was also awarded a $12.8 million contract for the upgrades in Butler County and Warren County. The entire 72-mile corridor of the Natcher Parkway is expected to be upgraded to I-165 Spur status between Bowling Green and Owensboro over the next five to 10 years. The effort to upgrade the Natcher Parkway to I-165 gained approval of AASHTO- The American Association of State Highway & Transportation Officials in December of 2015. ###
