Fire chief: 3 dead after Kentucky apartment building blaze

WINCHESTER, Ky. (AP) — A fire chief says three people are dead and at least five injured after a blaze at an apartment building in central Kentucky.

Winchester Fire Chief Cathy Rigney says two people were found dead in the blaze and a third person died after being taken to the hospital. She says first responders transported six people to a hospital.

Rigney says firefighters were called to the blaze about 1 a.m. Friday and arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming out of the front windows of the two-story structure. She says some people had jumped from second-story windows in the back to get away from the fire.

Investigators remained at the scene of the 10-unit building after daybreak to try to determine the cause of the fire.
