EPD: Son accidentally shoots mother in parking lot of department store

EVANSVILLE POLICE NEWS RELEASE

At 9:40pm on Thursday, Evansville Police were called to the parking lot of the east side Target store for a reported accidental shooting.

During the investigation, police determined Stacey Craven was injured when her 15 year old son fired a handgun while both were seated in their van. Police believe the 15 year old removed the gun from under a seat. He pulled the trigger, but thought the gun had an external safety that would prevent the gun from firing. The gun, a Glock, had a trigger assembly safety and discharged when the teen pulled the trigger.

Craven was shot in the back and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

This event is a reminder that all guns should be secured in a manner that prevents untrained individuals from accessing them. It is also a reminder that all guns should be treated as though they are loaded, muzzles should be pointed in a safe direction, and you should not put your finger on the trigger unless you INTEND to shoot.

This incident appears to be an accident and no charges have been filed in this case.
