DCSO: 18 year old Owensboro man charged with manslaughter

An 18 year old Owesboro man has been charged with first degree manslaughter after police say he shot and killed a man during an altercation with two women early this morning.

The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office reports deputies and emergency personnel responded to a residence in the 11-thousand block of Hall School Road in the St. Joseph area around 1:10 a.m. Monday where deputies found a 41-year old man on the floor inside the home with a gunshot wound to his chest. Authorities say emergency personnel tried to revive the man, but were unsuccessful.

Through an investigation, authorities say detectives determined that a confrontation inside the residence between the victim and two adult females had drawn the attention of 18 year old Steven Russellburg who was asleep in a bedroom. Police say Russellburg armed himself with a rifle and attempted to break up the altercation by firing a warning shot into the ceiling. However, authorities say the fight continued and Russellburg fired another round that hit the victim in the chest, killing him.

The sheriff’s office indicates an autopsy of the deceased male was scheduled for this morning in Madisonville.
Russellburg was taken into custody and lodged in the Daviess County Detention Center.
