Union County awarded $501,300 in discretionary funds for critical infrastructure improvements.

Funding to help with paving and bridge repair efforts

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (Aug. 13, 2019) – During a meeting of the Union County Fiscal Court today, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Commissioner Gray Tomblyn II announced a $501,300 discretionary award for vital infrastructure repairs along several county roads. The discretionary funding will allow the Union County Fiscal Court to issue a contract for resurfacing along sections of Dixon Road, Heavrin Road, Bunger Road, and Shilo Road. The half-million dollar investment supports Governor Matt Bevin’s commitment to prioritize transportation infrastructure projects and increase economic opportunity across the Commonwealth.

“The Bevin Administration continues to focus on critical infrastructure needs that improve safety and support job creation and retention in our cities and counties,” said Commissioner Tomblyn. “This discretionary funding award to the Union County Fiscal Court builds upon an ongoing list of transportation investments allowing city and county governments to identify projects that make a significant impact on local communities.”

Accepting the award on behalf of county government, Union County Judge-Executive Adam O’Nan noted the funds will allow the county to move ahead with some much-needed road and bridge repairs.

“We are thankful for the discretionary funds to assist Union County with local road and bridge repairs,” said Judge-Executive O’Nan. “The partnership we have with Governor Bevin, along with Secretary Thomas and Commissioner Tomblyn, has been tremendously helpful as we continue to move our county forward in both safety and economic development. In particular, the Governor’s emphasis on replacing and repairing substandard bridges will assist us in replacing a sub-standard bridge that is used both by our school district buses and by our area farmers. These funds will make a lasting impact on Union County.”

Projects submitted to the Department of Rural and Municipal Aid for discretionary fund consideration are evaluated by the KYTC district staff to assess the condition of roads and streets to determine the most critical needs based on factors such as safety, economic impact, and traffic volumes.

“I’m pleased to learn that Union County has received funding for these much-needed resurfacing projects,” said Sen. Robby Mills. “I look forward to their completion, knowing our community will benefit greatly from upgrades to these roadways.”

The discretionary award includes replacing a bridge on Bunger Road and four county roads that serve almost two dozen homes.

“Additional discretionary funds dedicated to Union County will continue to advance the safety of our roads in the region,” said Rep. Suzanne Miles. “I appreciate Governor Bevin and his team for their attention to the needs of western Kentucky.”

Union County Fiscal Court is responsible for administering the work, and KYTC will reimburse the county for these projects.
