Traffic Shift Along KY 56 Work Zone in Union County

KYTC NEWS RELEASE

A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has shifted traffic along the KY 56 work zone west of Morganfield in UNION County.

This work zone runs along KY 56/Morganfield-Shawneetown Road between KY 360 at mile point 7.812 extending eastward to KY 3393/The Morganfield Bypass at mile point 11.5, a distance of about 3.6 miles.

Traffic has shifted to a near normal alignment from the Sugg Creek Bridge at mile point 8.895 extending westward to KY 360 at mile point 7.812. This traffic shift will provide better driving conditions along the western 1/3rd of the work zone in time for the Thanksgiving holiday driving period.

Motorists should be aware that this continues to be an active work zone and traffic along this section of KY 56 continues to be restricted from the Sugg Creek Bridge extending eastward toward Morganfield. The contractor is attempting to get base pavement down to allow more normal traffic flow during the winter months, then return in the spring to place a final driving surface. Completion of this work will be weather and temperature dependent.

This project is the first phase of improvements aimed at providing a direct truck connection between Morganfield and the Shawneetown Bridge. Commercial trucks currently have to travel KY 109 to Sturgis to connect to US 60.

Approximately 1800 vehicles travel this section of KY 56 in an average day.

Hicon Construction, LLC, is the prime contractor on this $11.5 million highway improvement project. This project is approximately 68% complete.
