The Union County Public Library District’s Summer Read and Feed Program for 2016 was a huge success this summer.
Library Director Debbie McClanahan presented a report to Union County Fiscal Court last week and said this was the fifth year for the program, but she also noted the program was only five weeks this year.
She said the attendance was around 3,000.
Whispering Meadows was their lowest attendance site, which McClanahan said was disappointing.
After getting permission from parents, she informed magistrates last year was the first year they were able to share data with the Union County School District. She added that the school system looked at the data and discovered that the children that came to summer reading were more successful when they returned to school. She said the number of children that attended at least 20 days and read at least 20 books won a prize.
Children read a total of over 61-hundred books during the Summer Read and Feed Program.
McClanahan ended by telling magistrates it was a really exciting summer, and they are already preparing for next summer’s Read and Feed Program.
