Traffic ADVISORY – US 60 GREEN RIVER BRIDGE INSPECTION

A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to have climbers on the US 60 Green River Bridge at Spottsville on Friday, June 21, 2019.

An inspection team will be following up on a recent detailed inspection of the bridge structure to outline some bridge maintenance items that will require attention during construction of a new bridge at the site.

Some brief lane restrictions may be required to allow climbers to access the bridge structure and drop off equipment required to facilitate their work.

Most of the inspection work will be along the bridge truss below the deck and out of view of passing traffic.  Motorists should be aware that climbers and support vehicles may be on the bridge deck from time to time during the day.  The inspection team plans to be on the bridge from about 8:00 a.m., CDT, to about 6:00 p.m., Friday.

At this time, a contract for construction of a new bridge immediately downstream from the existing structure is expected to be ready for bidding sometime this fall.  Construction of a new bridge is expected to take about two years to complete.

The inspection team will confirm a list of maintenance items the contractor will be required to sustain on the existing bridge while it remains is service.

The US 60 Green River Bridge is located at US 60 mile point 19.388 in Henderson County.  Also known as the Spottsville Bridge and the Richard W. Owen Memorial Bridge, the 797 foot long structure was built as a toll bridge and opened to traffic in 1931.  Tolls were removed in August 1945.

Approximately 3,000 vehicles cross the bridge in an average day.  The US 60 Green River Bridge at Spottsville is 9 miles east of the US 41 Cloverleaf at Henderson and about 6 miles west of the Henderson-Daviess County Line.

The Spottsville Bridge is at Green River navigation mile point 8.6.
