HPD seizes 200 pounds of marijuana, firearms during routine traffic stop

What began as a routine traffic stop near a local elementary school led to the removal of nearly 200 pounds of marijuana and firearms from Henderson’s streets.

Henderson Police Department said that officers conducting a traffic stop in a marked school zone could detect a strong odor of marijuana as they approached the vehicle.

During the initial interaction, the driver admitted to having a firearm in the glove compartment.

However, a further search of the vehicle’s interior and the truck bed revealed a much larger discovery. Officers first located a rifle-style firearm on the floorboard and then another handgun in the center console safe.

Officers could still smell the odor of marijuana coming from the bed of the truck and once officers opened the tailgate, they observed multiple large black trash bags.

Officers asked the driver what was in the trash bags, and he said it was approximately 200 pounds of marijuana. The driver said he was transporting marijuana from Indiana to Kentucky.

In a Facebook post, Henderson Police Department officials said, “Finding drugs and weapons especially in a school area is a sobering reminder of why proactive patrols are so vital. We are incredibly proud of our officers for their diligence in keeping these substances out of our neighborhoods and away from our children.”

This case is an ongoing investigation.
