Residents evacuated, US 60 E in Henderson Co. closed Saturday due to natural gas leak

US 60 East in Henderson County was shut-down and residents were evacuated due to a gas leak over the weekend.

According to the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, Ray Darnell reported the accident at his residence at 10302 US Highway 60 East around 10:00 Saturday morning. He reportedly told authorities an unknown white male driving an older white Dodge truck came to his residence for a yard sale and when he left the vehicle backed into Darnell’s gas meter in his front yard and then left the scene. Authorities indicate the impact broke the meter’s pipe off at ground level causing a natural gas leak.

The 10-thousand block of US 60 East was reportedly shut down to traffic and nearby residents were evacuated for over an hour until Atmos Energy arrived on the scene and was able to stop the gas leak.

The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the accident and anyone with information about the driver is asked to contact their office at (270) 826-2713.
