LOUISVILLE ARCHBISHOP-CANCER

Kentucky city’s Catholic archbishop is battling cancer

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The Catholic archbishop of Louisville, Kentucky, has announced that he’s battling bladder cancer.

Seventy-two-year-old Joseph Kurtz has served as archbishop since 2007. He says he will undergo at least 12 weeks of immunotherapy and chemotherapy before having surgery to remove his bladder and prostate.

The Courier Journal reports Kurt has had health issues since about mid-April that led to medical tests and hospitalizations. He was diagnosed in June.

He is scheduled to begin treatment this week at the Duke Cancer Institute and plans to return to his role after recovering.

Kurtz is well-known nationally, having served as the vice president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops from 2010 to 2013 and as its president from 2013 to 2016.
