HCC Offering Pivot to Success Summer Bridge Program

Henderson, KY – Henderson Community College (HCC) has been awarded a grant to fund a Summer Bridge Program, called Pivot to Success, that aims to help students transition from high school and achieve success in college. This program is free to students.

The grant, which comes from the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, totals $31,420. HCC is currently recruiting participants.

The Pivot to Success Program will include a one-week First Year Experience (FYE 105) condensed class in June. This class focuses on strategies students need to be successful in college and life, including time management, studying techniques, financial literacy, and college resources and contacts.

In July, students will participate in four weeks of math and English/reading tutoring sessions to prepare them for college-level classes in the fall semester.

Students will also be paired with “near-peer” mentors. These mentors are slightly older students who have achieved success in college. Near-peer mentors will advise students during the summer and throughout the fall semester.

The program will also entail “Lunch and Learn” sessions throughout the summer. College and community leaders will speak at these sessions, offering both practical advice and inspiration.

Nationwide, bridge programs at both community colleges and four-year institutions have proven successful, helping students more comfortably move from high school into college and increasing retention of students from their first college semester into their second.
