A former educator was honored Monday night during the Union County Board of Education meeting at Morganfield Elementary School.
That was Public Information Officer Melinda Beauchamp, who continued reading while family members solemnly sat in the audience with tears in their eyes.
It was signed July 8, 2016 by Speaker of the House of Representatives Greg Stumbo and 7th District State Representative Suzanne Miles.
50 year old Meg Gatten, of Sturgis, passed away in June at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, TN after a blood vessel in her brain burst and she suffered a stroke.
Superintendent Patricia Sheffer added this was just a small tribute to Meg.
During the Superintendent’s Report, Mrs. Sheffer said she is thankful for their partnerships with the Union County Public Library and Union County Early Childhood Council for their work with the Summer Read and Feed Program.
Mrs. Sheffer also discussed the kindergarten readiness, although she stated they know as a district their percentage is not where they want it to be.
She concluded by saying they are looking forward to the new school year.
Board members also heard the attendance report as presented by Assistant Superintendent Steve Carter, and Union County High School Principal Evan Jackson presented opportunities for students for college-level courses that include Advanced Placement and Dual Credit.
Jackson said there are 14 AP courses offered at UCHS and the course has shown a lot growth over a five year period. He stated in the 2011-12 school year there were 74 AP enrollments, compared to 207 enrolled in the 2015-16 school year.
In addition, Jackson stated UCHS offered 16 dual credit courses last year, which has also shown growth. In the 2011-12 school year there were 181 enrolled, compared to 274 for the 2015-16 school year.
The next regularly scheduled school board meeting will be held Monday, August 22, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. at Union County Middle School.
