Trump promises comeback for Kentucky coal industry

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Republican Donald Trump is trying to woo Kentucky voters by promising a comeback for the state’s coal industry if he’s elected president.

At a Tuesday rally in Louisville attended by thousands of supporters, the billionaire businessman criticized President Barack Obama for having “decimated” the coal industry. Trump drew cheers by saying he loves “clean coal.”

Trump’s appearance comes ahead of the state’s Republican presidential caucus Saturday.

Trump continued his tough talk on immigration and trade but tailored his message to Kentucky by promising to preside over a comeback for coal.

The coal industry’s struggles have taken center stage in Kentucky campaigns. Coal supporters blame tougher environmental regulations by Obama’s administration for the sector’s slump. Appalachian coal businesses have also faced higher production costs and competition from other coal basins and natural gas.
