Morganfield man charged with murder appears for preliminary hearing

A Morganfield man charged with murder in connection to the death of a local teen appeared Thursday morning in Union County District Court.

During the preliminary hearing of 22 year old Steven Freeman Jr., court records show the judge referred the case to the Union County Grand Jury for the March session.

Freeman is charged with murder, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and operating on a suspended or revoked operator’s license.

According to state police, Freeman was driving a vehicle the night of February 10, 2016 when he hit 17 year old Damon Collins, of Morganfield, while riding a bicycle on Highway 2091 in the Whispering Meadows area. Collins was flown from the scene of the accident to a hospital in Evansville where he died from his injuries.

Freeman was arrested by the Union County Sheriff’s Department shortly after the wreck and lodged in the Union County Detention Center where he remains under a 500-thousand dollar bond.
