Union County High School Wrestling Wins School’s First State Dual Meet Championships

Category : Sports

This past weekend at Henry Clay High School in Lexington Kentucky the Union County Braves Wrestling team made school history by winning its first ever Kentucky State Duals championship.

Coming into the tournament ranked 2nd the Braves had to get past some highly rated teams to make it into the championship match.

The Braves defeated Simon Kenton in the opening round by a score of 41-30, then knocked off Meade County by a score of 48-27, and then rolled over a strong Woodford County team by a score of 69-7.

The Braves hopes of winning its first duals championship was almost cut short in the Semi final match against Trinity. Trailing 33-16 the Union County Braves had to turn to 4 wrestlers who had wrestled well all weekend to secure the victory. Strong performances from Rob Dezember, Trae Blackwell, and Jeffrey Wurth pulled the Braves to a 33-33 tie with Brock Ervin left to cap off the win. Ervin easily defeated his Trinity opponent and helped the Braves move past Trinity High School by a score of 36-33 .

In the championship match the Braves surprised Larue County by winning the first four matches to jump out to an early 15-0 lead. Larue County battled back to claim the lead by a score of 23-15. The Braves relied once more on the strong wrestling of their lighter weights to win the match by a score of 39-23.

Coach Ervin’s remarks:

All of the guys stepped it up a notch this weekend. When the matches got tight our guys wrestled hard. Big wins in the Larue county match came from Chad Gahafer who started things out with a pin and fired up the team. Jake Risinger continued to rev up our team win he knocked off Caleb Canter at 152.

Robb Dezember, Trae Blackwell, Jeffrey Wurth, Brock Ervin, and Jayce Carr I have to say were our go to guys on the day. Each of these wrestlers went undefeated and scored bonus points in many of the matches they competed in.

Reshawd Wilkins who is ranked 16th in the state defeated the 2nd and 3rd ranked wrestlers this weekend. His win against Dustin Darrah the number 2 ranked wrestler in the 220 pound division helped boost us past Trinity in the Semi’s.
