Whitfield Votes to Avert Default, Protect Social Security

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield (KY-01) voted Wednesday evening in support of H.R. 692, the Default Prevention Act, which would provide the Secretary of the Treasury the authority to ensure the United States never misses a debt payment and that Social Security benefits are paid in full and on time. Whitfield issued the following statement upon passage.

“Tonight’s vote provides a guarantee that U.S. debt will be honored and that seniors and the disabled will continue to receive their Social Security benefits. While this is an important safeguard to avoid a default, the fact remains more work needs to be done to bring down America’s debts and deficits, and to reign in our government’s out-of-control spending.”
