FRANKFORT, Ky. (Sept. 6, 2016) – Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes today received a proclamation from Gov. Matt Bevin calling for a special election on Nov. 8 in Kentucky’s First Congressional District after U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield officially resigned the seat effective today.
The special election coincides with the General Election also being held on Nov. 8.
The First Congressional District is made up of 35 counties and encompasses West Kentucky and parts of South Central Kentucky.
“I look forward to working with the county clerks in the First District as we prepare for the special election,” said Grimes. “I appreciate that Gov. Bevin recognizes the heavy financial burden special elections often place on our counties and has scheduled this election on the regular election day, Nov. 8.”
Pursuant to KRS 118.770, the deadline for Republican and Democratic candidates nominated by their party and independent and political group candidates to file their certificates and petitions of nomination with the Secretary of State is Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. ET. Write-in candidates must file declarations of intent to be write-in candidates no later than Oct. 28 at 4 p.m. ET.
“We are officially notifying the political parties – as well as anyone who may be interested in seeking the seat – of the details and pertinent deadlines,” said Grimes. “Any person who has questions regarding the election should contact my office or their county clerk.”
