VCSO: Arrest Made after Dog Dragged to Death by Vehicle

VCSO NEWS RELEASE

On Tuesday, May 03, 2016 the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Pearl Drive upon report of deceased animal. Multiple 911 callers indicated the driver of a black Ford F-150 pick-up truck had been dragging a dog on a leash behind the vehicle.

According to the sheriff’s office, one of the 911 callers witnessed the truck dragging the dog and attempted to stop the truck by honking her horn. When the driver failed to stop, the 911 caller sped around the truck on Pearl Drive and blocked the driver’s path. The driver exited his vehicle and untied the deceased dog, leaving the animal in the roadway. The witness reported being threatened by the driver prior to him driving away.

The release says sheriff’s deputies later located and questioned the driver of the truck, who was identified as Mr. Brandyn Cox. Mr. Cox explained that earlier in the day he drove Mr. Jamie McFarland to his residence at 5109 Old Henderson Road. Mr. McFarland then discovered that a dog had been left inside his residence unattended by a friend of his. The residence was littered with animal feces from the dog. Mr. McFarland allegedly made the statement, “I’m going to [expletive] that dog up! This is unacceptable!” Mr. Cox explained that he left in his truck after using the restroom, unaware that Mr. McFarland had tied the dog to the back of his truck.

Mr. McFarland was interviewed at his residence and authorities say he admitted to attaching the dog to the trailer hitch of the truck. Mr. McFarland claimed he tried to stop Mr. Cox from leaving. The next day, Mr. McFarland was transported to the command post to be interviewed by the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Section. Mr. McFarland was later placed under arrest and was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail at 6:18pm this evening.

The investigation determined that Mr. Cox had driven for just over five (5) miles before being stopped on Pearl Drive. The incident remains under investigation and additional charges are possible.
