Union Co. Fiscal Court presented 50 letters during open Budget Hearing; Magistrates approve proposed 2016-17 Budget

During an open budget hearing regarding the proposed use of county road aid and Local Government Economic Assistance Funds at the Union County Fiscal Court meeting Tuesday morning only one local resident addressed magistrates.

Donnie Greenwell presented 50 letters from residents requesting improvements on a couple of short county roads.

He added the spec building is not completed, but the gravel road is in bad shape.

Magistrate Joe Clements said neither of the roads are county roads or part of their inventory, and they would have to approve accepting the roads. Greenwell said the county maintains the road now to a certain extent, but Clements explained the reason the county grades it is because a lot of Union County students are picked up on that road.

After further discussion, Judge Executive Jody Jenkins indicated that the county has limitations of how the county road aid and the LGEA funds are used.

Following the public hearing, the regular fiscal court meeting was called to order and for approximately 45 minutes Judge Jenkins presented bids for the removal of paint on the exterior of the Camp Breckinridge Museum and road materials, with magistrates approving a motion for all the bids to be taken under advisement and for recommendations to be presented at the next fiscal court meeting. However, magistrates unanimously approved a bid from Compass Minerals of Overland Park, Kansas for reverse salt for $80 per ton with 500 tons available.

In other business, magistrates unanimously approved the reappointment of Andrew Arnold for his second four year term to the Union County Water District Board.

And magistrates approved the 2016/2017 Salary Schedule and the first reading of the proposed 2016/2017 Budget of $9,678,321.53.

Magistrates also heard an annual update from Tommy Rudd with the Union County Conservation District.

The next regularly scheduled fiscal court meeting will be held Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. at the Union County Courthouse.
