Trial date set for local man charged in wreck that killed a Morganfield teen

The trial date for a Morganfield man charged in connection to a wreck that killed a local teen earlier this year has been scheduled for April 2017. Court documents indicate the Union County Circuit Court judge set aside three days for the trial of Steven Freeman Jr. from April 18, 2017 to April 20, 2017. He will stand trial for charges of murder, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and operating on a suspended operator’s license.

According to state police, Freeman was driving a vehicle on Highway 2091 in the Whispering Meadows area in February of this year when he hit 17 year old Damon Collins, of Morganfield, riding a bicycle. Collins was airlifted from the scene the accident to a hospital in Evansville where he died from his injuries.

Freeman was arrested by the Union County Sheriff’s Office shortly after the wreck. He was lodged in the Union County Detention Center where he remains on a 500-thousand dollar bond.

Freeman is scheduled to appear for a pretrial conference in Union County Circuit Court on January 9, 2017.
