Treasurer of Union Co. Band Booster Club charged with theft

The treasurer of a local booster club has been arrested for allegedly embezzling money.

Union County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Heady released a report late yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon that 34 year old Crystal Shirley of Uniontown was arrested on November 16th for unlawfully taking money over an extended amount of time on several different transactions from the Union County Band Boosters. According to the deputy, Shirley was the treasurer and had access to the account at the local bank.

In addition, Deputy Heady states Shirley also failed to make a deposit after a ball game believed to be in the amount of about $1,000.

After Shirley was taken into custody she was lodged in the Union County Detention Center, but Deputy Heady’s report does not specify for what charges.

Union County Public Schools Superintendent Patricia Sheffer tells WMSK News when there was an allegation made that money was missing from an external booster club account, it was turned over to the Union County Sheriff’s Office for a thorough investigation. She adds that Crystal Shirley was arrested by the sheriff’s department and charged with Theft By Unlawful Taking and the money, a total of over 19-hundred dollars, was recovered.
