Traffic ADVISORY -KY Highway Crews Prepared for Possibility of Winter Precipitation Sunday Morning

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews will be on-call over the weekend and prepared to respond to call-outs for a round of winter precipitation expected to move across our Western Kentucky counties starting in the pre-dawn hours and into Sunday morning.

The forecast for Sunday morning includes a chance of some freezing rain and winter mix. Rain prior to the arrival of freezing temperatures will prohibit any opportunity for pre-treating to prepare for this winter event.

Crews will have salt trucks loaded before they leave work today so they can be prepared to respond quickly should travel issues develop. Supervisors will monitor conditions as the system develops.

As a reminder, highway crews are very limited in their ability to improve driving conditions during an event that includes ice accumulations.

While crews will be prepared to respond quickly should this event create travel issues, motorists are advised to carefully monitor the weather forecast for updates on this event as it develops. Appropriate caution is required, especially for anyone who plans travel in the early morning hours on Sunday.

Temperatures are expected to rise through the day on Sunday, so this winter event is expected to be fairly short in duration.

The National Weather Service and area news media outlets should have a better idea of the severity of this weather system as the forecast firms up going through the weekend.
